The penultimate of five children, BruceLee was born Lee Jun Fan on November 27, 1940 in San Francisco, California to Chinese opera star Lee Hoi Chuen and Caucasian Chinese Grace Ho Oi-yee. Lee’s family moved to the US a year before he was born, but they returned to Hong Kong when he was three months old. The name Bruce was given to him by a birth sister where he was born. However, he was not able to use the name until his later years.
Lee had his elementary school years in Edison, Washington before attending the University of Washington, where he majored in philosophy. During his school years he studied poetry, dance, gymnastics and judo. With a particular interest in Asian and Western philosophy, Lee incorporated a mixture of Asian religions and beliefs into his studies, which helped enhance his love of poetry and self-expression.
Before Lee settled for college in America, he had studied dance and trained with Yip Man in the Wing Chun form of kung fu. He later developed a unique fighting style – a hybrid of boxing and cha-cha dancing, which eventually became one of his legacies in Hong Kong.
Being a master martial artist without being a master Lee opened a chain of kung fu training schools in Seattle where he taught his own form of martial arts. At his school, Bruce Lee made history as the first kung fu instructor in America to teach kung fu to Caucasians. Regardless of race or ethnicity, Lee accepted students without discrimination, which eventually got him into trouble with Wong Jack Man when the famous fight between Wong Jack Man and Bruce Lee broke out.

Bruce Lee’s acting career began when he was just a kid. In fact, Lee had his first film appearance at the age of three months and by the end of his adolescence he had no less than 20 films to his credit. While most of his juvenile works are unknown and difficult to find outside of Asia, some of Lee’s notable work includes the 1941 film Golden Gate Girl , A Boy’s Beginning (1947), The Orphan Child (1960), the television series, The Green Hornet ( 1966-1967), The Big Boss aka Fists of Fury (1971), The Way of the Dragon (1972) and his first major Hollywood project, Enter the Dragon (1973).
Lee returned to Hong Kong in the summer of 1971 in search of better roles than what Hollywood could offer. During his glittering but brief career, the legendary martial artist established himself as a major film star in Asia and posthumously in America.

Lee, a nutritionally and physically fit man who appeared to be nutritionally and physically fit, died unexpectedly from cerebral edema, which had been caused in significant measure by an allergic reaction to a prescription pain reliever he was taking for an alleged back injury. Although there has been multiple speculation as to the cause of death, the coroners officially ruled his death an accident. Even more heartbreaking was the fact that Bruce Lee had died just prior to the release of Enter the Dragon, the 1973 box office hit that made him an international star. Lee was buried in Seattle.
Bruce Lee’s sudden death sparked several rumours. While some believed he fell victim to a curse, others speculated he was killed by Chinese gangsters. But the controversy surrounding Bruce Lee’s death was compounded in 1993 when his 28-year-old actor son, Brandon, died under mysterious circumstances on the set of the film The Crow . The younger Lee’s sudden death from an accidental shooting led many to believe that the family curse theory was even more surreal. Brandon was buried next to Bruce in Seattle’s Lake View Cemetery.
