Madlyn Rhue Bio (Early Life)

Madlyn Soloman Rhue (birth name Madeline Roche) was born on October 3, 1935 in Washington DC. The actress came from a family of three consisting of her mother, a businesswoman, and an older sister named Carol. Her father saved the family when she was a child and she was raised by her mother. Despite her circumstances, her mother was a loving woman and always told her that one day she would do something special.

Madlyn Rhue spent her formative years in several cities such as Baltimore before making a stopover in Los Angeles. She received her diploma from Los Angeles High School in the City of Angels. She then briefly studied acting at Los Angles College before moving to New York to seek better opportunities there. In New York, Rhue worked as a dancer in the Latin Quarters before returning to Los Angeles in 1958.

Madlyn Rhue began her career in 1959 with supporting roles in two films; Operation Unterrock and The Miracle. After this humble debut, the Washington native appeared in numerous other films, including The Ladies Man (1961), A Majority of One (1961), Escape from Zahrain (1962), It’s Madness , Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963 ), He Rides Big (1964), Kenner (1968), Stand Up and Be Counted (1972), etc.

Madlyn Rhue was married to an actor named Tony Young while she was alive. Young was a character actor and appeared in many films and television series, including Overland Road, Gunslinger, General Hospital, Bonanza, He Rides Tall, Taggert, Gemini Man, Spider Woman, and Knight Rider. Rhue and Young tied the knot in 1962. They married for eight years before divorcing in 1970. Their union produced no children.

Madlyn Rhue’s death

Madlyn Rhue long battled with multiple sclerosis throughout her life. MS is a disease caused by damage to nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It leads to serious after-effects such as impaired vision, speech and muscle coordination disorders and severe fatigue and cannot be cured. Rhue first noticed something was wrong with her body in 1976. She was shopping in a store when she passed out; urinating and vomiting. After the incident, her movements became clumsy and her vision became blurred. The actress consulted her doctors and after many tests, she was diagnosed with MS in 1977. The disease progressed from a point where she could not wear high heels to a stage where she had to use walking sticks.

At first, Madlyn Rhue kept her diagnosis a secret, which would have affected her ability to get the insurance needed to work in a film. She therefore made several excuses, telling people that she was involved in an accident or that she had an arthritic hip. Rhue finally announced her diagnosis in 1987. She received support from several peers, including people who wrote characters especially for her. She also starred in a national advertising campaign for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

As the illness progressed, the actress verified she was there from 1998 until her death from pneumonia on December 16, 2003. A private funeral was held for Rhue after Rhue’s death, and her sympathizers were urged to donate to the hospital where she was being held spent the rest of her life.

A fallout from Rhue’s long battle with MS was that it drained most of her resources. In a 1987 interview with People Magazine, the actress revealed that she had used up all of her life savings to pay off her medical bills. It got to the point where she had no extra money for herself and had to rely on Christmas/birthday gifts to get new clothes. Rhue also had to rely on the charity of friends to get the necessary equipment she needed, such as a motorized wheelchair. Given all of this, the actress didn’t have a large net worth by the time of her passing.
